Who is Elana Kagan?

Elena Kagan is the likely nominee to succeed Justice Stevens on the Supreme Court. Kagan, the current Solicitor General is the first nominee in forty years who has not served as a judge. She would be the fourth woman to serve on the court in history, joining Ginsburg, Sotomayor and retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor

If confirmed she will be the third women to join the bench. Three out of nine women, were getting closer to representing the sex ratio in the US.

Kagan was born to a Jewish Manhattanite family. She attended Hunter College High School and graduated from Princeton University, summa cum laude, with a degree in History in 1981. At Princeton, Kagan received the Daniel M. Sachs Memorial Scholarship. She went on to Worcester College in Oxford where she eventually earned a M.Phil degree in 1983. She graduated Harvard Law in 1983. After working for Williams & Connolly, a litigation firm in Washington, DC, Kagan went on to teach alongside President Obama at the University of Chicago Law School, achieving tenure in 1995. She has notably served the Clinton administration, taught at Harvard Law, where she was later appointed Dean.

As Dean she banned Military recruitment at Harvard in opposition to the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

During the Solicitor General nomination process there were rumors that Kagan is gay, which are yet to be publicly confirmed or denied but which are likely to come in to play during her confirmation. At 50 years old, Kagan would be the youngest justice on the court.

President Obama will likely make an made the official announcement nominating Kagan at 10 a.m. Monday in the East Room of the White House.

I’m excited to see how this plays out.
